3 Unforgettable Nature Excursions from Douala

Limbe: Beaches, Primates, and Botanical Garden

Just one hour's drive from Douala, the small coastal town of Limbe enchants visitors with its black volcanic sand beaches lined with coconut palms. The Limbe Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary for rescued primates, allows visitors to observe chimpanzees and gorillas in a semi-natural setting. Do not miss the Limbe Botanical Garden, founded in 1892, which houses an exceptional collection of tropical plants on the foothills of Mount Cameroon.

Ekom Nkam Falls: A Grand Spectacle

Located approximately three hours from Douala, near the town of Melong, the Ekom Nkam Falls offer a striking natural spectacle. Water plunges from a height of 80 metres into a canyon surrounded by dense tropical forest. This majestic site notably served as a filming location for the 1984 movie «Greystoke». Access is via a forest trail that is itself a rewarding hike, ideal for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Mount Cameroon: The Roof of West Africa

Rising to 4,095 metres, Mount Cameroon is the highest peak in West Africa and a still-active volcano. From Buea, an hour and a half from Douala, several trekking routes lead to the summit in two or three days with a mandatory local guide. Every February, the «Race of Hope» draws runners from around the world for a legendary timed ascent. Even without aiming for the summit, hikes on the lower slopes offer exceptional panoramas over the Gulf of Guinea.

Planning Your Excursions

All three sites are accessible by car from Douala. For Limbe, a day trip is sufficient. For Ekom Nkam, plan a full day. For Mount Cameroon, two to three days are needed. Local agencies in Douala offer organised excursions with transport and guide. The best period is between November and March, during the dry season, for optimal conditions.
